Interior – Bleaching the Radio Knobs and Buttons

This Tech Tip was produced by Warren Wundt and is posted here with his permission.

The knobs and buttons on the AM Studebaker radio for my Wagonaire have turned a tobacco brown. I read somewhere on the SDC Forum that a hair salon product from Great Britain was the best way to bleach the plastic knobs and buttons back to gleaming white.

Materials Used

Jerome Russell Blonde Cream Peroxide
I bought the Jerome Russell Blonde cream peroxide through Amazon. It ships from London. It is a hair salon product.

Jerome Russell (Punky Colour) Power Bleach
The powder bleach came from Walmart.

The Process

  1. Mixed with the cream hydrogen peroxide and brushed on
  2. Exposed to UV, in this case, natural sunshine
  3. Wiped off and repeated as necessary until the plastic knobs and buttons became totally white

The Result

The knobs and buttons on my Wagonaire radio are now gleaming white!
